  • MEDIENTAGE MÜNCHEN: TPEG warning messages in the test network 10 D in Bavaria

In addition to sirens, announcements and information via radio, TV and the Internet, encoded traffic messages offer a major advantage: they immediately inform car navigation systems and also reach road users who do not speak the local language or are not familiar with the local conditions.

TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts Group) is an internationally standardised protocol for transmitting encoded mobility information with high accuracy, independent of language, via DAB+ and mobile internet. The TPEG application Emergency Alerts and Warnings (EAW) was developed internationally in cooperation with the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance. TPEG EAW provides information on events such as major fires, floods and disasters and the areas affected by them. In this way, navigation systems can warn in time and also calculate alternative routes for large-scale re-routing.

As part of Bayern Digital Radio’s “Test Network 10 D” project, Bayerische Medien Technik is providing all the necessary TPEG software components for encoding, transmitting and displaying TPEG-EAW and is developing the necessary interfaces.  The BDR test network includes the two DAB+ sites Wendelstein (10 kW) and Büttelberg (2 kW). The project is funded by the Bavarian Regulatory Authority for Commercial Broadcasting (BLM).

At MEDIENTAGE MÜNCHEN, Bayern Digital Radio will inform about technical possibilities for alerting the population via the digital terrestrial broadcasting standard DAB+.

  • Redundancy option available

With TPEG STANDBY, bmt now provides a TPEG playout redundancy system to guarantee 24/7 TPEG traffic message provisioning. In case of network outages or computer failures, TPEG STANDBY switches between two or more TPEG ON AIR playouts fully automatically, to enable seamless provisioning of TPEG data to end user devices.

  • Enhancing road safety: New technology provides travellers with public emergency warnings

The German Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) and members of the Traveller Information Services Association (TISA), namely ARD (NDR & WDR), bmt, GEWI, mecom, NNG, TomTom, and Teatownlake, have successfully concluded a trial, which provides public emergency warnings to travelers in real time.
